Trying to come back to gentoo after a long time away...following installation instructions, and I am trying to emerge grub2. Forgive if I don't copy/paste voluminous material.

>#emerge sys-boot/grub

Almost works but stops after "emerging (1 of 4) x11-libs/libxcb-1.10........"

Lots of lines follow, then

Checking for XCBPROTO... no
Configure: error: Package requirements (xcb-proto > 1.10) were not met:

No package 'xcb-proto' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.

There is more, but it is murder to type on an iPad mini.

No help with google and searching this forum, any ideas? Only thing I can find that's close that I can emerge is x11-proto/xcb-proto, but seems odd it doesn't pull itself in

I think I had a bad tarball. I gave up on grub2 and installed old fashioned grub, got it,work, the got kernel panic when I booted...even when I tried genkernel. Also I kept getting weird errors when I would load nano, but it seemed to work. I honestly didn't check the checksum...

I have since started over with new everything, and no errors up to emerging the kernel, not even with nano, and I checked the checksum. So I think I had a hokey install from the start with a corrupt file of two.

If I get another kernel panic I will likely either vomit or give up. Maybe both.

use lilo wiki, when installing stop at the point of stage3, boot loader, kernel reboot to test that it boots....

once you have that booting then move on, reboot into live cd remount everything then rechroot & finish emerging everything you want to run. i suggest looking into the wiki for manual kernel building instead of using genkernel.
