Hi,

I want to install Gentoo but with a constraint. The system partition must not exceed 1GB. i can have a second partition with no seize limit but only for data.

i know it's possible because the live cd is only 800 Mb.

How can i obtain this seize ? i tried to remove Portage after the installation but i have not been able. Someone has already tried that?

Thank you in advance

Hello,

Is that size constraint also available for the builds ?

It is possible to strip-down a Gentoo, but to build it, you need more than 1 Gb. I think you need from 8 to 16 Gb minimum, but more if you build software as LibreOffice or Firefox.

Take a look at systemrescuecd, this is a small gentoo, with a lot of features.

Thanks you for reply;

I don't have any size constraint for the builds, only the final system must not exceed 1Gb.

I just need console and no GUI. My final goal is to create a retro-‐gaming video game console running ME and trim down system requirements to use fewer resources than a standard install.

It's a work for studies.

I am looking for systemrescuecd.

In your case, you mount /usr/portage, /var/tmp/portage to an other partition.

If you don't need build tools, you can create a root using binary packages from an other build system, and an embedded profile for example.

A console, and no GUI, is more-or-less a stage3. An unpacked portage snapshot is another
512MB, at a guess, together with whatever distfiles you want to keep around, and then there
are the kernel sources which you don't need to keep either.

A 1G console installation looks pretty doable; just unpack a stage3 and don't add anything.

You can make it the same way liveCD works to save space on system partition. Name "LiveCD" says nothing about boot or root device, it can easyly run with hdd.
So, you save space (a lot of space in fact), but you can't update your system. Since 1GB is not enough for running builds anyway it's hardly a problem. It's just that update will require running mksquashfs again, which will probably take like 5 minutes every time you run update.
