So, I just updated my kernel to add CONFIG_FHANDLE, in preparation for updating udev. I rebooted before doing the udev update, and everything seemed to boot fine, except vesafb doesn't appear to load in dmesg. I can SSH in, and that works fine, but no graphics. I'm specifying gfxpayload for grub2 as 1280x1024x24, which worked previously, but now it's just a black screen after the kernel begins to load. If I comment out the gfxpayload, I get the normal 80x24 console just fine. If I recompile without CONFIG_FHANDLE and reboot, I get the full size framebuffer back.

Anyone else seeing similar behavior, or have any ideas about what might be messing up here?

Well, this isn't really solved, but I switched to uvesafb, and a few recompiles and a "video=uvesafb:..." kernel parameter later, I have a framebuffer again. Still no idea why something so seemingly unrelated as CONFIG_FHANDLE disabled the built-in vesafb module from loading, but I have no more bandwidth to figure it out at the moment.
