My laptop is Thinkpad W520, and I want to install thinkfan, but there is no /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal directory which thinkfan.conf needs.
So I want to know whether there are some methods that can generate the directory--/proc/acpi/ibm/thermal.

Do you have thinkpad_acpi module loaded?

I do not know thinkpad_acpi is in kernel or needing emerge?
In kernel, I have chosen "thinkpad acpi laptop extras" with "[*]".
In modules: thinkpad_ec tp_smapi hdaps.

Do you have these configs defined :
Code:
tfoerste@n22 ~/devel/linux $ zgrep ^CONFIG_*.*HWMON /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_HWMON=m
CONFIG_THERMAL_HWMON=y

tfoerste@n22 ~/devel/linux $ zgrep ^CONFIG_*.*THINK /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_THINKPAD_ACPI=m
...
?
FWW here's my ThinkPad T420 config : http://bpaste.net/show/282754/

Yes. Just I config with 'y' not 'm' for:
CONFIG_HWMON=y
CONFIG_THINKPAD_ACPI=y

In my opinion, this should not affect the /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal directory.

ok, FWIW the thinkpad module here at my system uses these modules
Code:
n22 ~ # lsmod | grep think
thinkpad_acpi          55592  3
nvram                  12916  1 thinkpad_acpi
rfkill                 18414  3 cfg80211,thinkpad_acpi
snd                    46337  16 snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,thinkpad_acpi
hwmon                  12761  3 coretemp,thinkpad_acpi,thermal_sys

Thank you. I think my kernel version does not support /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal. I am not going to use it.
