I just installed Gentoo with instructions from the handbook, when I reboot my system hangs at 'switched to clocksource tsc' and then my screen goes blank. I am using a manually installed kernel from gentoo-sources. I have tries various grub options (acpi=off, nomodeset etc.) but none work.
Any help would be appreciated

Is your screen blank or is the video signal disabled? If the latter, this sounds like a typical case of missing framebuffer and possibly also missing firmware. The thread linked by aCOSwt goes through some of these problems, so please try the steps there and report back whether it works.
