I am installing gentoo for the first time after many years away from linux.

I am trying to install the hardened amd64 with uClibc profile, following the install handbook step-by-step.

I was able to resolve one minor issue (sys-libs/timezone-data didn't install and I had to emerge it manually) but otherwise everything has been fine up until 6.e "Configure Locales". Specifically, nothing this section mentions seems to exist: locales.gen, locales, locales-gen... None of it.

I've searched around and found references to uClibc having locales issues but haven't been able to map those discussions to my situation and they tend to be older, anyway. Based on one old thread here, I tried adding "-iconv" to my USE variable. "emerge --info" showed that it took, but "emerge --update --deep --newuse @world" did not help.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to Gentoo.
Is this what handbook your following?
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Hardened_uClibc

Are you trying to create and embedded system?

Yes, that is the handbook I am using. No, I am not trying to create an embedded system. I'm trying to set up a minimal installation inside of a VirtualBox VM. From what I read, I got the impression that uClibc was ready for basic desktop installs. I expected I might run into trouble down the line and was willing to adapt if that happened, but thought I should be fine at least through the base system install. Is that wrong?

rothaar ... no, that is not wrong, infact blueness (Anthony Basile) has done a lot recently to improve uClibc support, you might look at his blog.

uclibc does have full C99 locale support, this is enabled via the iconv useflag, "locale-gen" (a debian script thats provided as part of glibc and probably glibc specific) isn't provided, and simialrly with /etc/locale.gen (its configuration file). As I remember you are provided 'locale', and setting LC_* via /etc/env.d/02locale should be sufficent.

That would disable locale support in uclibc ...

best ... khay
