My latest install based on my stage4 from about a year ago (based on a working one) does not have any sound working by default.
Previously sound was plug and play with my config being 99% identical.

I have the appropriates drivers in my kernel, but alsa seems to be messed up.

cards are detected but play no sound and if i manually increase volume in alsamixer i need to wear earplugs, since a screeching noise is all i get.

Any leads on what i should do? (looked at pulseaudio and alsa wikis but still have no clue)

Hi!

I don't understand your scenario at all. You have a new fresh install, and the previous one was working with the same config? The installed packages are the same?

What says dmesg about alsa devices?

KR,

(basically i rebuilt using old config bits from a old stage4 and upgraded it from a 1 year sleep, so versions bumped a lot)

speaker test= no sound for 15 mins

aplay -l

dmesg

Code:
ls -al /proc/asound/

running volwheel tells me pcm is messed up
Code:
 volwheel
defined(@array) is deprecated at /usr/bin/volwheel line 45.
(Maybe you should just omit the defined()?)
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0

trying disabling those in kernel

CONFIG_SND_SUPPORT_OLD_API:

Say Y here to support the obsolete ALSA PCM API (ver.0.9.0 rc3
or older).

Support digital beep via input layer (SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP)

Sequencer dummy client (SND_SEQ_DUMMY)

Default time-out for AC97 power-save mode (SND_AC97_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT)
Default time-out for HD-audio power-save mode (SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT)

both set to 0
