Hello all,

I'm installing Gentoo on a new system (with an Nvidia card [GeForce 640]). I don't yet have X or a WM installed, but am having trouble with just the standard console. I am able to see the GRUB2 menu, and select Gentoo, but then I see a little bit of the initial kernel output (that is typically logged to dmesg), and then the screen goes blank. If I give it a few seconds to finish booting, and log in, I can reboot the machine (though I can't see anything on the screen). To me, that seems like a problem with the framebuffer. I have uvesafb support in my kernel, and have set up the initramfs as I have always done in the past.

/var/log/messages just shows that the boot was successful (and it was); I just can't see anything on the screen.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

with improper values, many screens refuse to display something in bad resolution (size, refresh...)
you might just get no error because screen doesn't report error but turn them black as protection ; and you may not have or have disable screen error display.
you should try with vga=ask and see if choices there fix that.

Thanks for the suggestion. Using vga=ask didn't work as it is a deprecated option. However, I've found that if I disable the DRM support for nouveau in the kernel, then I get output all the way to the prompt. However, then I can't start X thereafter. :(

I get the dreaded "no screens found," but noticed that it is looking for nouveau and nv even though it says "NVIDIA GLX Module" before that.

It was my understanding that the Nvidia framebuffer support needed to be disabled in the kernel, but that the DRM support needed to be there. However, with it there, I get nothing at the console. Without it there, I get output on the console during boot, but then can't start X.

Any ideas?

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

Disregard as I am a moron. I forgot to set the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary
