Hi all, I'm a bit new to this forum.

So I've just gone through my first Gentoo install, and I've managed to solve most problems I've run into, but this is a bit curious. I have a Radeon HD 7790, which uses the BONAIRE firmware. I've included the following files into my kernel:
BONAIRE_ce.bin
BONAIRE_mc.bin
BONAIRE_me.bin
BONAIRE_mec.bin
BONAIRE_pfp.bin
BONAIRE_rlc.bin
BONAIRE_sdma.bin
BONAIRE_uvd.bin

My kernel version is 3.12. According to http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon these are the files I need to load. I've double-checked that these are the files I've listed to be included in the kernel (no silly typos). However, when I boot up, I get the following error: "smc: Error loading firmware: "radeon/BONAIRE_smc.bin"". (not one of the files listed above). This file doesn't exist in my /lib/firmware directory after installing the linux-firmware package. Other than the 60-second period it waits for before giving the error, everything else seems to work fine. The terminal runs at my native resolution and there are no further errors in dmesg. I haven't yet installed X11 yet, so I'll see if there are any issues there. I want to know if anyone here knows what this file is and why it's not included but something is looking for it.

Well it looks like the necessary file was in radeon-ucode but not in linux-firmware. In addition, there was another file, BONAIRE_vce.bin, which I installed as well. It looks like this is a mistake, since neither file is mentioned on the wiki or included in linux-firmware, but they're necessary to boot without errors. I guess I should mark this as solved (not sure how to do that), but whoever maintains the wiki and the linux-firmware package should be notified I think.

bluecoat ... just edit the first post and add [SOLVED] to the subject.

I assume you mean the gentoo wiki ... anyone can edit it, you just need to register an account. As for linux-firmware you can open a bug on b.g.o ... again registration required.

best ... khay

BONAIRE_smc.bin is only in linux-firmware-20131230 and later, which is going to be stable soon in bug 508982.

BONAIRE_vce.bin is for the video encoder (VCE) which is supported since kernel 3.15.
