Use lspci I get my wireless card: Inter Pro/wireless 2200BG, from google I know that the ipw2200 module should be compiled, however I can't find it for start.
Then I search the forums, I got the answer:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-979206-highlight-ipw2200.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-979756-highlight-ipw2200.html

Code:

Networking support-->wireless --> cfg80211 wireless extension compatibility

more drivers show up in

Device Drivers ---> Network device support -->Wireless LAN,

including the one I was looking for:

Device Drivers ---> Network device support -->Wireless LAN-->Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG

I can say the problem is solved. However, how I can know 'cfg80211 wireless extension compatibility' must be enabled before I can find 'Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG'?
Is there any detailed document or tutorial I can use to tell me that:
1. How many sections in the kernel
2. The exact meaning of each option, should I enable or disable
3. The dependencies between different kernel options
4. What options should I use for specific device

Thanks, any replies would be appreciated.

Usually life is easier than this example.
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux;make menuconfig

type / and enter
a search dialog box appears
type IPW2200 and enter
the help page for IPW2200 appears:
Quote:
Symbol: IPW2200 [=n]
Type : tristate
Prompt: Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG and 2915ABG Network Connection
Location:
-> Device Drivers
-> Network device support (NETDEVICES [=y])
(1) -> Wireless LAN (WLAN [=y])
Defined at drivers/net/wireless/ipw2x00/Kconfig:66
Depends on: NETDEVICES [=y] && WLAN [=y] && PCI [=y] && CFG80211 [=m] && CFG80211_WEXT [=n]
Selects: WIRELESS_EXT [=y] && WEXT_SPY [=n] && WEXT_PRIV [=y] && FW_LOADER [=y] && LIB80211 [=m] && LIBIPW [=n]

Depends on: CFG80211_WEXT [=n] is not satisfied
close the search dialog and start a new search with /, for CFG80211_WEXT, from this help
Quote:
Location:
-> Networking support (NET [=y])
-> Wireless (WIRELESS [=y])
(1) -> cfg80211 - wireless configuration API (CFG80211 [=m])
Prompt: cfg80211 wireless extensions compatibility
Close the search and find and enable "cfg80211 wireless extensions compatibility" As you have seen the IPW2200 choice appears when all dependencies are met.
