Hi,

I have a Gentoo box to serve various applications, like serviio, dovecot, webcam, ftp etc. for home usage. It is an old laptop with a new battery that lasts for a long time as the screen is almost never switched on. As I also use it as a file server, I have a high capacity storage hard drive connected via USB. The drive has its own power source.

This setup sometimes suffers from power cuts. The laptop is expected to last for long hours with no electricity, but the disconnection of the USB drive causes it to panic, of which I couldn't resolve.

Any ideas?

FNX,

Powering down a mounted filesystem without unmounting it first is always a problem.
CAn you mount the USB drive read only unless you actually need to write to it?

Well, I guess that would save my disc from getting corrupt, but the real problem is that the disconnection of this specific device by any means (mounted or not) causes the same failure (kernel panic).

Nevertheless I'll test my system as you have suggested.

Thank you for your advice.
