No user software bug, no matter how severe, can crash a system as you describe. The usual explanation for this type of failure is bad hardware. Compiling gcc is CPU intensive, so if your cooling is insufficient, you may overheat the system during the build.

my system halts at this point every time I try to emerge it. it always crashes at this point. This is the last thing in ssh shows before the connection reset error. I've left the system on for days and it does not feel warm. I've been fighting with emerge for five days now, nothing else halts the system this way.

There's a possibility is that the file system is running out of inodes on a large build such
as gcc. It would be worth running "df -i" and seeing how many inodes your /var filesystem
has spare.

I can't recall if this error will produce any useful comment in /var/log/messages, but it would
be worth a look.

It might also be worth running memtest, to see if there's a reproducible memory glitch.

Running out of inodes will not halt the system. The build will fail and emerge will dump back to a shell prompt. The remnants of the build will be left behind.

Indeed, but I'm not quite sure what he means by "system crash".
