Dear friends,

I am some how confused about trivial thing - I want to switch from kernel autoassembly of my software raid arrays to userspace.
Root is on a separate partition, so I do not use any initramfs stuff.

What exactly should I do ?

dmpogo,

Adding mdadm to the boot runlevel and turning off raid auto assembly should be enough.
Check that you have a /etc/mdadm.conf file.

should /etc/mdadm have anything ? From the comments in it right now, it reads as if it autodetects md arrays and can be empty.
Also, I have mdraid and mdadm init scripts. Currently mdraid is in boot (and it calls mdadm)
and mdadm is in default ( what put it there, I wonder ?). Is that the right configuration ?
