Hi There,

I am trying a 32bit install in a vbox guest under a Ubuntu x64 14.04 host. I am using the 32bit stage 3 tarball with matching 32bit CFLAGS. The issue is when I attempt to config the kernel using the menu, I am getting a 'CPU you selected does not support x86-64 instruction set'. In the menu, there are only x64 CPU's. I have tried three of them with the same error. Info attached.

Any ideas?
TIA,

Rick

From what you say, it seems like your kernel source tree got corrupted (you didn't import it from another installation, did you?).

Does it work if you do this in the kernel sources dir? (be warned that your config will be erased!)

Code:

$ make mrproper
$ make ARCH=x86 menuconfig

It looks like you have the "64-bit kernel" option checked on the kernel's main menu. For some reason it always shows and is selected by default on 32-bit systems.

Sorry to say,

Same thing. Source tree was/is not corrupt.

That's it!

Handbook does not mention that.

You are correct. Even in the 32bit kernel config, the 64bit master switch in the main menu is turned on by default. Surly, that is a bug.

Kernel compiling as I write this :D

Many thanks,
Rick
